make-up and supervision of running crews for main stage productions.

An introduction to costume technology. Lectures provide background, history and theory;
laboratory hours teach hands-on skills needed in a theatrical costume shop including hand and
machine sewing, fabric identification, patternmaking, and garment construction.

and executions of sketches and renderings.
TH 4630 Special Topics - Costume Crafts
Exploration of techniques and the development of skills used in the creation of costume crafts
items like masks, armor, and millinery. Projects will address the use of thermal plastics, leather
work and dyeing used in successful theatrical costume craftwork.

This course is a graduate level introduction to costume patternmaking including drafting, flat pattern, and draping methods and techniques. This is a project-oriented course where students gain practice in all three patterning methods on projects for men's and women's historically based costumes.
TPA 5243 Advanced Period Draping and Fitting Techniques – 3 units
(Fall 2018, Fall 2019)
This course is a graduate level advanced practice in costume patterning for theatre with an emphasis on draping and drafting historically based garments for women and men. Projects include period garment research and measuring, sizing, fitting and grading techniques to accommodate actual performers' measurements and stage movement requirements.
TPA 4045 Costume Design for the Stage – 3 units
(Fall 2018, Fall 2019)
This undergraduate course is an exploration of the elements and principles of design as they relate to stage costuming. Coursework includes figure drawing, rendering techniques, watercolor painting, use of mixed media, character development and scrip analysis.
TPA 4239 Costume Patterning - 3 units
(Fall 2018, Fall 2019)

A graduate course in advance millinery techniques including felt blocking, buckram, straw braid, wire frames, sinamay as well as trimmings, feather work and millinery flower making.
TPA 4240 Advanced Costume Draping and Fitting – 3 units
(Fall 2018, Fall 2019)
This is an undergraduate level course in advanced costume patterning for theatre. This course has an emphasis on draping, flat patterning and drafting historically based garments for women and men. Projects include period garment research and measuring, sizing, fitting and grading techniques to accommodate actual performers' measurements and stage movement requirements.
TPA 5941 MFA Practicum in Costume Technology – 1 unit
(Fall 2018, Spring 2019, Fall 2019, Spring 2020)
This course allows students to develop skills consistent with professional practice in the execution of advanced costume technology projects, including but not limited to: interpreting costume designs for patterning and constructing period garments, historical underpinnings or tailoring. As well, this may include creating costume crafts items, dyeing or painting and creating fabric modification techniques, constructing millinery, or styling, ventilating or constructing wigs or specialty makeup needs for stage productions.
TPA 2248 Stage Makeup – 3 units
(Spring 2019, Spring 2020)
A study of the theory, practice, and application of makeup for theatre. This course is designed to help the student (both actor and makeup artist) build a working knowledge of procedures, materials, sanitation and techniques used in theatrical makeup. This is a hands-on lab style course with lectures and demonstrations. Students are provided with opportunities to research, design, and execute various makeup applications.
TPA 3333 Costume Crafts, Dye and Millinery – 3 units
(Spring 2019)
Exploration of techniques and the development of skills used in basic costume crafts items, millinery and dyeing utilized in theatrical costuming. Millinery techniques include buckram and wire foundation hats, sinamay straw fascinators and ribbon trimmings. Crafts include basic leather tooling and dying, mask making and use of thermal plastics. Fabric manipulation includes fabric dying and color matching as well as shibori (Japanese tie-dye) and color discharge techniques.
TPA 4238 Advanced Costume Construction – 3 units
(Spring 2019, Spring 2020)
Advanced practice in constructing specialized costumes for stage use. Students gain practical hands-on experience in theatrical sewing techniques with historically based costumes constructed to reflect various period details, and beginning tailoring techniques. Projects include a period corset, a tailored Victorian vest and a sampler of specialized sewing machine feet and fabric manipulation techniques.

This is an introductory course into the art of costume design. Character development and the design process are covered throughout the course. Costume rendering, including figure drawing and watercolor painting, are focused on as well as the differences in designing for stage, film, or television.
TFDP 190 Millinery Techniques for Stage and Screen
(Winter 2016)
This course is an overview of hat making for stage and film. Hat techniques include soft hat construction; buckram wire frames, sinamay fascinators, and felt pulled cloches. Fitted based headdresses are also covered in this course.
TFDP 143: Costume Construction -4 Units
(Spring 2015, Fall 2015, Fall 2016)
This course includes the teaching of basic hand and machine-sewing techniques, working with fabrics and patterns, garment construction, basic fabric dying, and mask making. Students build from scratch a garment and mask to fit them as well as a portfolio of sewing techniques. Students also gain the experience of working in a theatrical costume shop environment.
TFDP 145: Makeup for Theatre, Film, and Television -4 Units
(Fall 2014, Spring 2017)
This course teaches basic skills, design and application of stage make-up including: facial anatomy, proper makeup hygiene, corrective make-up, old-age, scars and wounds, horror, fantasy, period makeup, sex reversal, characterization, wigs, and facial hair. Over the course students develop a make-up portfolio of their work.
